Room k

Description

Thomas Staub

Room k is situated in the north-western part of the house. Just as the other rooms in this area, this room is part of the enlargement of the Casa del Torello in iulian-claudian times. The walls are mainly constructed in a mixed opus incertum and only very few remains of a decoration are preserved. Due to its placement next to the utilitarian rooms i and l, a function related to the household work — may be a servants or slaves quarter — seems most probable.

This area of the house was part of the absolute first excavations carried out in Pompeii during April 1748 (Fiorelli 1875, p.419 and plans by La Vega 1810 and Giosué Russo 1817), soon thereafter reburied and re-excavated probably sometimes between 1876 and 1878, not documented.

Dimensions: 3.08 - 3.45 m x 3.30 - 3.50 m = 11.08 m²
