North Wall

Description

A. Karivieri & R. Forsell

The wall is located between 24b and V 1, 23b
It has an east-west orientation.

Description: The wall is built in opus incertum and consists mostly of limestone, lava and pieces of cruma. The wall consists of two sections divided by an entrance towards V 1, 23b. There are some larger limestone blocks by the entrance at the eastern section. They are placed vertically and measure from 0.38-0.98 m. On both sides of the entrance, the inner corners have been faceted. However the latest floor made in lavapesta does not follow these faceted edges but has a straight corner towards the entrance. When the entrance was open towards the atrium of V 1,23 there was white wall-plaster on the inner sides of the entrance walls. In a later phase, when the latest floor had been made, a thin wall was built to close the entrance. Today only the first layer of stones of this wall is preserved, 0.15 m high, consisting of lava stones.

Wall-plaster:
At the floor level beneath the lavapesta floor, two layers of wall-plaster under coating are preserved and on the western side there are remains of a red painted wall-plaster.

State of preservation:
The upper parts of both wall sections are missing.

Observations: the east wall is built against this north wall. The northwestern corner is more complicated to date.

Dimensions: Total l. 2.38 m; western part l. 0.60: h. 2.32; eastern part l. 0.70; h. 2.26; w. of door opening 1.08.
