Upper floor

Description

Henrik Boman

In room 6, beam holes, supported by the second brick band, at 2.6 -2.8 m in height, are preserved in the north wall, with imprints of the floor in the plaster running all along the east wall, indication a 2nd floor, not a mezzanine structure. However, there are no beam holes visible in the south wall - neither obvious traces of the beams, nor mended or concealed holes are visible.

No traces of a staircase have been found, if not assuming that the block in room 7 is a first step. However, the location of a stair in the NW corner, indication a stair along the W wall, by the window, is less likely. And, important, there are no beam holes are found in this room. Room 7 seems to have been under construction in 79 AD, stone chips found just below an assumed floor level, and the large cut block now in the NW corner is lying on accumulated earth and ash, presumably placed there post-excavation.
There are no traces of doors or other a connection between the rooms situated around room 6. No windows, no doors are found in the upper floor.

The taberna and houses around V 1,1.32 have 2nd floors, which makes is most likely that this edifice also where equipped with a 2nd floor. However, the reconstruction of the 2nd floor is at the moment an enigma.
