East Wall
Description
Thomas Staub
E wall: width 4.95 m, max. preserved height 3.30 - 3.70 m (south-east corner). Only near the south-east corner, some plaster is preserved (between 0.50 and 2.90 m height, width 0.65 m). The lower part of the wall (until 2.40 m height, where preserved) consists of lava-incertum, there above of cruma-incertum, set into the reddish mortar. In the north, a Sarno stone block (0.50 x 0.30 m) is inserted into the incertum in 0.50 m height, at the south-east corner, the Sarno stone blocks from the doorframe between atrium 4 and tablinum 13 are reaching into the wall. At this corner, the original wall is preserved in 0.75 m width and up to 3.60 m height, at the north-east corner for 1.10 m width, whereas parts of the remaining wall must have collapsed in a height between 3.20 m downwards to 1.30 m. These parts of the wall show a modern reconstruction of mainly stone blocks (0.08 x 0.05 m - 0.25 x 0.15 m) and some mixed rubble.
