North Wall

Description

Thomas Staub

N wall: width 3.25 m, max. preserved height 4.40 m. The eastern part (width 2.05 m) is covered by plaster until 0.40 m height. Large parts of the wall are covered by modern concrete, containing, amongst others, lapilli. The wall itself seems to consist of a mixed opus incertum of Sarno stone, cruma and lava. Above 1.70 m height, the wall consists of cruma-incertum, inserted in the reddish mortar. At 2.30 m height, Sarno stone blocks in the west and east corners form the springers of a relieving arch; the keystone is placed in 2.90 m height. The arch is constructed with rectangular blocks of Sarno stone, cruma and tuff, either as narrow blocks (max. 0.08 x 0.40 m) or two rectangular blocks above each other. Above this, some remains of plaster. The wall is, where visible, made of cruma-incertum with reddish mortar.
