East Wall

Description

Thomas Staub

East wall: width: 5.40 m, max. preserved height: 4.50 m (at southern end). Plaster covers the wall on an area up to between 1.10 m (central part) to 3.10 m (southern part) height. At floor level, remains of the cut off tiles are still visible along the wall. Above a line between 1.50 m (north corner), 1.20 m (middle part) and rising towards the south corner to 4.10 m height, the wall is a modern reconstruction of smaller stone blocks. The ancient wall consists up to a height of 2.60 m of lava-incertum, between 2.60 and 3.10 m height, of mixed lava and cruma-incertum, and above this of cruma-incertum, all set into the reddish mortar. A stuccoed pilaster, 0.55 m wide and 0.02 m deep, marks the opening towards atrium4. The frame of that entrance is, once more, constructed in Sarno stone blocks, the first one visible in 1.90 m height, ca. 1.25 m x min. 0.55 m. The plaster hides the next one, probably a stander, the next block is a stretcher, 1.20 x 0.50 m. Then follows a 0.40 x 0.50 m large block, and at the top one more stretcher, 0.75 x 0.50 m.
