East Wall
Description
Thomas Staub
East wall: width: 2.80 m, max. preserved height: 4.10 m (southern corner). The reddish plaster, observed both on the south and west walls, is on this wall preserved only at the corners, at the northern one also the seam to the greyish plaster of the upper zone is preserved. Just above the floor level, two parts of an older decoration, carrying yellow colour, are preserved. At the north corner, this earlier plaster continues behind the north wall of this room. The wall is constructed of lava-incertum up to 1.30 - 2.30 m height. In the middle of the wall, in 1.30 m height, a stretching Sarno stone block (0.55 x 0.25 m) is inserted into the rubble. The rest of the wall is built with an opus incertum of mainly Sarno stone rubble, containing lava and Cruma as well, all set into the reddish mortar. 0.55 m from the north corner, a 0.70 m wide window is placed in 2.50 m height (height of window unknown, since the lintel is missing). This window narrows towards the street, on the sides for ca. 0.10 m, at the bottom for 0.25 m. To the north of the window, the wall is constructed of smaller stone blocks (max. 0.20 x 0.10 m) and rubble with a yellowish mortar, in parts reinforced by modern concrete.
