Floor
Description
Thomas Staub
The floor in this room is made of lavapesta bedding, covered with a lime-cement floor into which mainly pieces of lava, but also pieces of mainly coloured limestones and some pieces of coloured marble, are inserted. It is the same as in atrium4, going through the entire opening. Geometric patterns set out in white tesserae, ca. 0.02 x 0.02 m large, mark the transition between the two rooms. In line with the corner on the atrium-side, one row of tesserae is laid out in north southern direction, followed by a second one after 0.09 m towards the east. After these, a row of rectangles (0.30 x 0.25 m) is laid out, each filled with two crossing lines (like an X) made of ten tesserae in each line. After a further 0.07 m, a final row of white tesserae is running across the opening. A diamond formed red limestone marks the centre of the room. The floor abuts against the threshold towards andron10, whereas the threshold towards cubiculum8 is placed on top of it. The pavement continues under the plaster.
