South Wall
Description
Thomas Staub
South wall: width: 3.45 m, max. preserved height: 5.10 m, of which the uppermost 1.10 m are a modern reconstruction. The wall is covered with plaster with remains of the decoration up to the height of 2.20 m (western part) - 3.20 m (eastern part). The wall stands on top of the floor. Above the plaster, the wall is covered by a yellowish mortar and heavy pollutions, why the material used is only visible on a few spots. Where it is visible, it consists of very mixed materials, containing Sarno stone, lava, cruma and spolias, amongst these a piece of a tile with round markings (diam. ca. 0.015 m) on its front side. In 4.20 m height, a row of six beam holes (diam. 0.15 m) is set into the modern reconstruction. This wall abuts against the W wall, on which an older plaster layer is visible, which continues behind the south wall.
