Room 05

Description

Room 5
This small room (1.7 m) contains the larger of the lararia of the house. The semicircular altar is built against its southern wall and faint remains of the decorations on the wall still show one painted snake on each side of the altar. The room with the lararium probably belongs to the original phase of the house, since the building material of the walls, where visible, corresponds with the material found in the original walls. In addition, some remains of a First Style decoration on the upper part of this wall indicate an early construction date for the wall.

This part of the house was excavated between 1836 and 1838 (Pompeianarum Antiquitatum Historia vol. 2 (Fiorelli 1862, 329 - 353))

Dimensions: 1.80 (S wall) x 0.95 (W and E walls) m = 1.71 m2.
