East Wall
Description
Thomas Staub
The wall is built in opus quadratum using tuff stone blocks. Seven rows are preserved, the lowest two with a height of 0.82 m, the others with a height of 0.7 m. Ca. 0.18 m from the north-east corner is a 0.76 m wide, 2.65 m high, and 0.40 m deep door opening, leading to side entrance 2. The 0.17 m high threshold is made of a greyish-yellow stone and is put against the threshold towards fauces3 and the E wall. The first row consists of a 0.18 m wide block in the N, continuing behind N wall and S of the door a 0.15 m wide stone. In 0.55 m h, on both sides of the door, remains of iron, probably modern. The second row is constructed of the protrusion from the north wall, a 0.12 m wide block, and after the door, a 0.60 m wide block, thus constituting the corner block to the facade. The third row repeats the organisation of the first, even here with remains of iron, in a height of 1.95 m. The fourth row, with the upper frame of the door, consists of one block, 1.10 m wide over the door, and abuts against the north and south walls. The block is broken at two places above the door. Even the next row consists of one block, but here engaged into the north wall. The sixth row again is one block, this time engaged into the south wall. In the uppermost row, the 0.90 m wide northern block engages towards North, whereas the 0.55 m wide southern corner block (the figured capital) is missing.
w: 1.10 m, max. preserved h: 5.15 m.
