East Wall
Description
Thomas Staub
Width: 3,75 m, height: 4,4 – 4,5 m. Most of the wall is made of a mixed opus incertum consisting of mainly sarno stone, lava and cruma set in a greyish mortar, but to large extent covered by modern concrete. The northern part of the wall (1.0 – 2.4 m wide) seems to made of another opus incertum, in the lower parts (up to 4.3 m height)made of nearly purely lava with some pieces of limestone and in the uppermost parts above of nearly purely red cruma, all set in reddish mortar. This seems to be analogues to the building material of the adjacent house (V 1,7) in its original phase. The central area is partly covered by a reddish course plaster. In the n-e corner a 0.45 x 0.25 m large rectangular hole can be observed in 2,65 m height. Another smaller hole (0.1 x 0.15 m) is situated 1.15 m from the north wall in 2.5 m height. In the s-e corner the tuffa stone blocks of the façade are showing an edge reaching into the west wall for up to 0.15 m. Three masoned cauldrons are set up against the wall, two in one structure in front of the north-east corner and a single one in front of the south part.
