Wall decoration (extant)

Description

Mats Holmlund

The remaining wall plaster of middle zone of the east, south, and west walls of room 2, contains traces of a diamond pattern. The pattern covered the entire middle zone and consists of diagonal flower garlands that circumscribe flower medallions. The original colour or colours of the pattern are not discernable, but due the floral motif, one may surmise the garlands and medallions probably were painted in green and yellow and thereby making the pattern effectively "stand out" from the red background.

The medallions consist of a four-leaf clover with heart shaped petals arranged, perpendicularly around a central dot. A smaller heart shaped petal is located between each petal of the clover. The rim of the medallion is made up of a circle with an outer edge consisting of twenty small wave crests that encircles a small central dot.
Each medallion is offset each other 0.14 m to the left and right, or up and down.

The garlands are made up of a nexus that consists of a circle that inscribes a small dot. From this nexus four sword-like petals extends perpendicularly, and diagonally between them, an intersected flower is located. The intersected flower is made up of the sepals, the ovary, stamens and the pistil. The garland ends (and another one begins) in a small flower corolla, consisting of a stigma and six petals.
