South Wall
Description
Renée Forsell
The S wall consists of two parts, one pilaster abutting to the E wall and a free standing pillar, framing the openings towards the atrium in the SW and the triclinium to the S. The upper part of the wall is missing. The E pilaster consists of large limestone blocks with a filling of smaller limestone, cruma and tufa stones towards the E wall. The mortar is buff tempered with lime, lava and cruma. A large part of the pillaster is still covered with wall plaster. The plaster is dark and weathered.
The W pillar consists in the lower part of large limestone blocks, especially the corners, with a filling of limestone, some tile fragments, cruma and lava stones. The original mortar is yellowish buff with a temper of lava and lime.
There are remains of dark and weathered wall plaster still in situ and a lot of modern support mortar. The limestone blocks in both parts are partly black as damaged by fire.
