North Wall
Description
Renée Forsell
The wall is built in op. incertum and consists mainly of limestone, lava stones and cruma. There are some grey tufa stones in the middle part of the wall. In the upper middle part there is an area where cruma occur more frequently than in the rest of the wall. There is also a few spolia: a few pieces of travertine and one piece of a cocciopesto floor.
In the lower part of the wall, up to 2.10 m, the stones are set in a greyish mortar tempered with small pieces of lava and lime. In the upper part the mortar is mainly yellowish tempered with large pieces of lava, lime and cruma.
There are minor remains of plaster coating on some of the stones, mostly those in the upper part of the wall.
The wall stands on the lavapesta floor which shows the wall was built later than the floor.
