South Wall
Description
Renée Forsell
The wall is built in op. incertum containing mostly limestone and lava but also some tufa and cruma. In the lower W part of the wall there seems to have been a hole, filled in and mostly covered with modern mortar.
There are six visible beam holes. At the time of documentation in 2008 five of these were more or less filled with lapilli. The two westernmost holes go through the wall and are also visible in the N wall of the neighbouring room 7. During the restoration of the house in 2010/11 the holes were emptied. Above the beam holes the wall is now covered in modern mortar. Below the beam holes there is an indentation in the W part of the wall showing where the ceiling must have been.
There are remains of wall plaster on especially the E half the wall. The preserved wall plaster in the dado now has a pinkish hue. The main zone seems to have been white but most of it is in a bad state, weathered and dirty. The plaster turns outwards under the beam holes showing the edge of the ceiling.
