East Wall
Description
Renée Forsell
The wall shows two phases as the wall stands on the threshold and is thicker than the threshold, and indeed thicker than the other walls in the house. It has been rebuilt to enforce the N and S walls of the room.
Both doorposts are built in op. quadratum in tufa blocks and op. incertum towards the N and S wall. Above the door opening is a relieving arch with voussoirs of limestone and tufa. Above this the wall is restored. The modern wooden lintel was inserted in 2010/11.
Wall plaster covers the walls up to the wooden lintel except for a section along the N corner of the doorpost. The plaster is also damaged along the floor at the corners of the doorposts. It is best preserved in the dado which is greyish white. The higher up on the wall the more weathered and grey the plaster gets.
Wall: l. 2.69m (E doorpost 0.76m; W doorpost 0.84m; door opening 1.09m); h. 4.28m; wall thickness 0.50m
Plaster: h. N part dado 1.39m; main zone 2.75m
S part dado 1.36m; main zone 2.80m
