West Wall

Description

Renée Forsell

The wall is built mainly in op. incertum and, in the northern end, op quadratum that consists the southern doorpost of the door way towards the atrium, room 2. The incertum part consists of limestone, cruma, lava stones and tufa. There are rows of cut limestone blocks located in the southern part placed almost diagonally from the upper southern part downwards to the north. Between the blocks there are rows of plaster and terracotta. The wall north of this is to a large extent covered with modern mortar and thus is probably a reconstruction. The north edge of the wall built in op quadratum consists of at least nine limestone blocks of various form and size. In the upper south corner there is a rectangular recess lined with tiles at the height of 2.52-2.70. It has been filled in antiquity. The recess seems to have been the location of a lintel block belonging to the doorway of corridor 3.
There is one substantial part of wall plaster still in situ in the south corner. The plaster has faint traces of yellow finishing. In the lower and southern part of the wall many stones show traces of plaster coating.
