Floor
Description
Renée Forsell
There are remains of two floor levels in the atrium. Remains of the upper cocciopesto floor and the bedding of it the can be seen along the W wall. There are also preserved parts of the floor along the E wall in front of the door of room 4 and along the SW corner of the impluvium. The bedding of the floor contained a lot of smaller stones and tile fragment. An abundance of plaster fragments where also noted in the W part of the atrium. In many cases the monochrome plaster was made of almost pure lime and was determined as belonging to the first style. In the SW corner there was also an accumulation of pozzolana clay, perhaps used when making mortar during the latest rebuilding phase.
Remains of an earlier floor was found W of the impluvium and along the W part of the S wall. Along the S wall it was located c. 0.30 below the level of the latest floor. The lower level floor was broken through, by water pipes and drains, when the aqueduct water was installed. The later floor was then laid on top of it. The pipes and drains were connected to a tufa impluvium located in the middle of the floor.
