Room s
Description
A. Karivieri & R. Forsell
On the east side of the peristyle garden, two rooms s and t are walled off with windows towards the garden. The room s was entered from the north and another door led to exedrar on the south side. The effects of the earthquake of AD 62/3 can most clearly be seen in this part of the house. The southern part of the window wall of room s, and also the whole partition wall between s and exedrar have sunken into the underlying cellar to a level of 0.3-0.4 m below the former position.
The room had a cocciopesto floor decorated with geometric design, consisting of black and white tesserae. The south part of the floor was restored after the damage caused by the earthquake of AD 62/3. Furthermore, the north edge of the floor seems to have been restored, possibly in connection with the installation of the outgoing water-pipe that led water from the garden to the vicolo.
The room was decorated in the Fourth Style phase, with characteristic decorative borders.
