East Wall
Description
A. Karivieri & R. Forsell
The eastern wall is located between 24a and 24b. The wall has a north-south direction. The upper part of the wall and the southern part of the door opening is missing. There have been reinforcements with modern mortar especially onto the upper part of the wall.
There are remains of wall plaster still visible.
Description:
The wall was built in opus incertum. It consists of mostly limestone and lava, some cruma and yellow tuff. An entrance and a staircase leading from room a to room b is dividing the wall into two parts. The northern part of the wall includes several cut large limestone blocks. One, 0.40 m high and 0.56 m wide, is placed at the height of 0.62 m above the floor. The block continues into the north wall. In the north part there is a recess at the height of 1.82 m to 1.95 m. Above the recess, a limestone block is cut to form the northeast corner. There are lava stones in the lowest part of the wall especially in the south part.
State of preservation: The upper part of the wall is missing and the wall is heavily restored.
The northern part of the wall is 0.58 m long, the part that forms the door opening is 1.57 m and the south part is 0.95 m long.
The door opening to 24b has been rebuilt. During the first phase the opening on the south side had a recess 14-16 cm deep. The total width of the south side is 0.42 m.
The staircase to 24b was wider in the first phase.
The north part of the wall has been rebuilt at least twice and a pillarlike part protrudes into the door opening, corresponding to a protruding element in the south part.
In the northeastern corner at the door level, two layers of wall plaster are visible behind the north wall, the upper layer white and the lower black and red. The uppermost cocciopesto floor is laid against the black and red wall-plaster and the white plaster above this cocciopesto floor.
A foundation for the first step of the staircase is visible in the centre of the wall and seems to be contemporary with the first cocciopesto floor. The white wall plaster is above this staircase foundation. The width of the staircase seems to have been 0.70 m and the depth of the first step 0.37m.
Dimensions: l. 3.01m; h. 2.74m.
