Threshold

Description

A. Karivieri & R. Forsell

The threshold is located between taberna 22 and the sidewalk of Via del Vesuvio west of taberna. It has a N-S orientation.

The limestone threshold between the doorposts of taberna 22 consists of three pieces. The southernmost piece of the threshold is broken and reaches the S doorpost only in part. The threshold is raised in relation to the floor of the room behind it, 6 cm in the north and 12 cm in the south. It is also higher that the sidewalk of Via del Vesuvio, 14 cm in the north, 24 cm in the south.

It has a continuing slit in the middle running south to north, 4 cm wide, 3 cm deep, until ca 0.6 m from the north edge, where the whole eastern half of the block has been cut down 3 cm, to the same level as the slit. The threshold is very worn and has been constructed to fit a sliding door, with pivot holes for the fitting of the door on the northern side.

There is one square hole for the pivot setting nearest to the door 4x8 cm, 2 cm deep. It is located 6 cm from the outer western side of the threshold block and 3 cm from the north wall. A round bolt-hole, 4 cm in diameter 2.5 cm deep, is located 68 cm further to the south from the north wall. There may possibly have been a hole used for door fitting in the south end of the threshold, with a preserved length of 6 cm, width 4 cm and depth 2 cm.
The threshold is 2.68 m long and 30-33 cm wide.
