West Wall
Description
Henrik Boman & Monika Nilsson
The western wall is built in opus incertum with mainly limestone, some lava and a few tufa and tile fragments. Mortar and under plaster still cover a large part of the wall, especially in the upper half. At the southwestern corner are limestone blocks belonging to the S wall of room c. The short end of this wall forms the southernmost part of the ala’s west wall. No binding stones were used between the two parts. An opening between the two rooms, to the south and with the limestone blocks making up one doorframe, has been filled-in. A niche in the lower N corner is dilapidated.
Remains of the early type A plaster are found on both the limestone blocks and the incertum. The niche and the filling in the former doorway have the late type I plaster; the niche also has type G plaster under type I.
