Floor
Description
Henrik Boman & Monika Nilsson
The floor in fauces is made of typical cocciopesto with fairly large pieces of crushed terracotta, without tesserae but with white and black inclusions of other uncut materials. In the centre of the floor, a conduit runs from the impluvium in the atrium, through the fauces, under the pavement and into an outlet in the street.
The conduit seems to be cut into the floor, with a cover of tiles placed under the level of the floor. The presumed cut away floor is destroyed above the cover tiles.
The conduit in the atrium and tablinum was filled with pure earth that we assume are post eruption, so the conduit was in use when Vesuvius erupted.
