East Wall
Description
Henrik Boman & Monika Nilsson
The east wall in room 16h is almost completely destroyed.
The northern part of the door frame is constructed with largelime stones in five courses. On this part of the wall there are traces of red plaster, but the plaster is only found on single blocks, not covering any joints.
Only the lower stones of the S part of the wall are preserved today. This part of the wall seems to have been built in inferior material compared to that of the northern part of the door frame. The wall is 0.37 m thick, the same dimension as the N door frame. Four layers of plaster are found in the SE corner of room 16h, but only the top layer can be connected to the remains of the E wall. The other three continue on the S wall, behind the E wall.
Stones are projecting from the south wall in line with the now destroyed upper east wall. Similar stones, slightly projecting, are visible at a high level by the door to V 1,17. This type of bounding stones are not observed at any other location in V 1,14-16, nor in V 1,13, and we can assume that it is a result of modern reconstructions/restorations. Large quantities of stone were found around the E wall - perhaps a result of the collapse of the wall in 1980?
The wall was reconstructed in 2008.
