South Wall

Description

Henrik Boman & Monika Nilsson

The south wall was, until destroyed in the earthquake of 1980, preserved to a considerable height (c. 4 m). The wall (PPM 534, fig. 2) seems to have been built in opus incertum. There are no indications of how the wall abuts upon the western wall, with its large door opening. Today (2011), the wall is about one meter in height, of which most part is a reconstruction after 1980. The material consists of a majority of limestone with a few lava stones incorporated.

The preserved plaster layers (two layers) in the eastern lower corner, abut to the cocciopesto floor and extend over it, indicating that the plaster was applied after the construction of the floor. Only very faint traces of the decoration are visible today.
