Floor
Description
Henrik Boman & Monika Nilsson
In its present state, the cocciopesto floor is fragmented, but it was originally thick and there is therefore large amounts of the crushed floor still in situ. The material consists of crushed brick and small, white tesserae which are found scattered on the ground.
Along the door opening on the W side, three installations are preserved: 1) A drainage in the SW corner of the room, below floor level, with a conduit that runs out of the building into a cesspit below the pavement. The cesspit was not excavated. 2) The lower part of an amphora sunk into the floor. 3) A lava threshold in four sections.
The only preserved patches of floor surface are found along the S wall, by the E wall, and in the NW area of the room. At the S wall the wall plaster does not align with the floor. Along the E wall the relation between floor and plaster is difficult to establish, since the installation by the E wall is built upon the floor without affecting the surface of the cocciopesto. At the N wall the wall plaster seems to be attached to the floor.
