North Wall

Description

Henrik Boman

The N wall of room 1 continues from the western façade, as part of the door frame to the large door 32, into room 2, without any visible traces of a door frame to doom 2. The north wall of room 1 has two doors; a wide door (w: 2m) to room 7 from the area in front of the counter, and a narrower door (w: 1.2 m) to room 6 from the area behind the counter. The western end, between the door to room 7 and the façade, is built in opus testaceum, the eastern part in opus listatum.

The mid-section of the wall is in a bad state of preservations; the mortar is destroyed and some of the bricks replaced in modern repairs. The upper rows of stone and brick are modern, including the parts with lime stones used instead of the tufa stone cut rectangular in the opus listatum as found in the lower part of the wall.

There are no plaster remains preserved, though the good state of preservation of the brickwork and mortar in the lower region of the center wall, indicates that this part of the wall presumably had plaster protecting the wall some considerable time after the excavations.
