Hearth

Description

Henrik Boman & Monika Nilsson

The hearth stands on a layer of earth/clay mortar, with traces of modern mending at a level 0.2 m above the floor we found. The lava stones found around the well is in line with he modern mending, and the eastern part of the hearth is heavily reconstructed, if not, as we believe completely reconstructed. The lava stones could be the result of the same reconstruction. There are no remains of plaster on the wall behind the hearth, and it is likely that a modern reconstruction/repair, was made when the plaster had fallen of, since it is less likely that the room was completely unplastered in Roman times. The plaster in the door way indicates an original plaster in the room.
