Threshold

Description

Henrik Boman & Monika Nilsson

The threshold facing Via del Vesuvio is constructed of roughly cut lime stones, however, important to notice is that no cuttings for a door system has existed on these stones. A minor investigation under one of the stones, revealed modern material (plastic) on a level lower than the stone.

There are no traces of a floor today.

Considering the rough cutting, the lack of a door system and the absence of any floor remains in the area, led us to the conclusion that the threshold is a modern construction, or repair. Since no other features are observable of the stones, we assume that material at hand was used for the threshold. The stones are most reasonable not the original threshold pieces, the pieces have a measurement of 0.39 m in width, which corresponds well to the width of the walls in the area, as well as the miscellaneous stones found lying around in the bakery.

We could only assume that destruction in this area had been heavy, presumably connected with either a bomb hit in 1943, or the earthquake in 1980.
