East Wall
Description
Henrik Boman & Monika Nilsson
The eastern wall in room a has a door and a window to room b. The north part of the wall is heavily destroyed, with lintels for door and window completely missing. The frame between the door and the window is restored in brick, but only the lower tiles are original. The southern part is built in large orthostats, well preserved and with cuttings for the lintel to both room b and corridor c.
As found in the late history of building, the doors gave access to the rear of the building. Soundings under floor level, where the cocciopesto/lavapesta floor was completely destroyed, showed that the wall stands on a solid foundation running from the N wall to the S wall, and that on the lower part are surfaces preserved (approx. 0.4 m below floor level) with a grey, rough plaster. This indicates that the partition is an early feature of the layout of the building, though the original distribution of the access areas in the east wall of room a most likely was different. We assume that the door to the rear of the building was different from the door to the corridor. This interpretation spreads new light to the features of the corridor as well as of room b.
