Water conduits (lead pipes)

Description

Renée Forsell

A water distribution box was found by the NW corner of the impluvium. Four lead pipes have been connected to the box. One lead pipe was found intact in the bedding of the floor, cut through the earlier floor, running from the threshold of the NW corridor b and to the distribution box. This was the inlet to the box. A second pipe was found running along the N side of the impluvium. After c .0.75 m the pipe was broken and only fragments were found. As this pipe was located close to the floor surface and not in the floor bedding, it might have been damaged during the excavation in the 1830ies.
Another fragment of the pipe was found by the threshold to room d in the NE. It could therefore be assumed that this was the pipe leading water to the fountain in that room.
A third pipe directed the water towards the impluvium, and a fourth pipe lead to the S. Both these pipes were broken close to the box. The distribution box had two taps. These were connected to the outlet of the two latter pipes.
