Description

A. Karivieri & R. Forsell

South wall, west part
The west part of the south wall is located between room c and atriumb west of the door opening.

Description:
The wall is built in opus incertum and consists of mostly limestone, a couple of lava stones, terracotta pieces and one cruma stone. The door opening in the east is built of alternating vertical and horizontal large Sarno limestone blocks.
In the western corner against the west wall there is a filling at the height of 2.0 m; 0.72-0.73 m wide consisting of yellowish crude mortar, small pieces of cruma, marble, terracotta and amphorae.

Wall-plaster:
The wall is, to a greater part, covered by plaster coating.

State of preservation:
The upper part is missing and the uppermost part reconstructed. The wall is covered to a large part by plaster coating. The limestone structure in the lowest part near the door opening is very damaged.

South wall, east part
The east part of the south wall is located between room c and atrium b, east of the door opening. It has an east-west orientation.

Description:
The wall is built in opus incertum and consists of limestone and spolia of wall plaster. Nearest to the door opening, it is built of alternating vertical and horizontal large Sarno limestone blocks.

Wall-plaster:
There are remains of wall-plaster in the southeast corner. Red colour is visible from the height of 2.10m. Below it, there is mostly plaster coating with chop-marks.

State of preservation:
The uppermost part is missing and the uppermost part is reconstructed. Some of wall-plaster is preserved but mostly there is plaster coating.

South wall, west part

The filling in the western corner is connected with the construction of the lararium in the atrium. It is possible that there was previously a door opening, possibly connected to a wooden staircase against the western wall of room c. Another possibility is that the wall structure behind the lararium was damaged after the earthquake and needed reinforcement.

Observations:

There are two iron clamps 0.13-0.15 m from eastern corner at the height of 0.60 m and 2.10 m.

South wall, east part

There are remains of four iron nails in the wall. Iron nails: first at h. 1.54 m; second at h. 1.76 m; third at h. 1.70 m; fourth at h. 1.71 m.

Nails three and four are placed 0.13 m from the SE corner, the first is placed 0.41 m from the SE corner and the second 0.31 m from the SE corner.
