Abstract:
Margareta Staub Gierow continued the study of Casa degli Epigrammi greci (V 1,18), Arja Karivieri proceeded with the work in Casa di Caecilius Iucundus (V 1,26) and the Annex (V 1,23) whereas Henrik Boman and Monica Nilsson initiated the study of Building complex V 1,14-16.

Work in Building complex V 1,14-16
Building complex V 1,14-16 was excavated in the 1880’s, but its back rooms suffered from bombing in World War II and it has since served as dumping grounds for leftover material originating from the insula and beyond. Boman and Nilsson therefore had to start work by removing the massive dump. The workmen of Vitiello’s, a company employed by the Soprintendenza, had the responisibility of transporting the soil outside the city limits of ancient Pompeii after a thorough scan for finds had been executed by the trainees under the responsibility of Boman, Karivieri and Nilsson. Rooms a, f, h and i were thus cleaned so that they could be investigated by Boman and Nilsson and drawn by Pinto-Guillaume. Pettersson sampled plaster for future analysis.

Work in Casa degli Epigrammi greci (V 1,18)
The study by Staub Gierow continued with the investigations and descriptions of the masonry in all rooms of the peristyle area. The floors of rooms l, m and n were cleared so that they could be documented and drawn. All thresholds in the peristyle area were cleaned, described and photographed by Staub as part of an independent study to produce a threshold typology of the insula. Measurements and drawings were supplemented by Pinto-Guillaume for an axonometric model of the building to be produced for a conference this autumn. Pettersson re-examined the plaster analyses from the first campaigns in 2000 and 2001 and with the supplementing samples she will produce a report later in the year. The wall decorations of exedra o have never been documented before, but Holmgren now made copies in scale 1:1 on plastic film to be digitally processed after the campaign.

Work in the Annex of Casa di Caecilius Iucundus (V 1,23)
Room f of V 1,23 contained a large dump of soil, fragments of ancient floor and wall decorations, roof tiles, pottery and a single coin. In this room, Karivieri carried out an excavation since no floor layer was preserved. In addition, the floor of room k was cleaned and documented. Some wall plaster remains were sampled by Pettersson.

Work in Casa di Caecilius Iucundus (V 1,26) and Tabernae 25 and 27
Karivieri had the floors of rooms c and d cleaned for documentation. The drawings of the wall paintings in exedra o were supplemented by Holmgren, Pinto-Guillaume made section drawings of the tablinum and Nordström cleaned, measured and drew the plans of Tabernae 25 and 27 which flank the entrance to Casa di Caecilius Iucundus. All thresholds were cleaned and documented.
