V 1,26 Casa di Caecilius Iucundus - South House, Room r
A. Karivieri & R. Forsell Page updated: 2015-08-26
DESCRIPTION
Exedra r was created, when the original entrance of the South House towards east was closed and the three rooms s, r and t were built inside the eastern portico of the peristyle in connection with the annexation of the North House. After the fusion of the two houses, the peristyle area and the rooms behind it were painted in the Fourth Style.

In the eastern wall, south of the walled-up entrance, there is a lararium niche, still preserving the original decoration in stucco relief in the Third Style, purposefully maintained when the wall was repainted in the Fourth Style, as witnessed by the ornamental borders.

The rooms above, on the east side of the peristyle, were entered from the north. In this part of the house the effects of the earthquake of AD 62/3 can most clearly be seen. The whole partition wall and the entrance between s and exedra r have sunken into the underlying cellar to a level of 0.3-0.4 m below the former position. Thus, even the northern part of the original cocciopesto floor was repaired with poor quality lavapesta pavement.

On the south side of the exedra r, another door leads to room t.

A conduit ran along on the east side of the garden, in front of exedra r, to collect water from the roof. When exedra r was extended towards the garden, the eastern conduit was cut off and its southernmost part refilled.

Two columns supported the roof of this elongated exedra.
